PROGRAM NOTES

A visual approach to the
demographics of the housing shortage was very effective in describing how future
development will affect new business. John Burns, a demographics consultant for developers
made the presentation at a recent luncheon meeting.

Thanks again to John
Stern, President of LAN, and Carol Schatz, President of CCA, who helped plan the very
successful oint Charter Reform Presentation.

Assemblyman Wally Knox, 42nd
District, with chair of Economic Development/ Environmental Committees, Ed Casey (I.) and
other members discussed the year ahead in Sacramento.

Thanks to Bob Gardner (I.)
Board Member, and Ran Bates of the League of California Cities and SCAG's Transportation
Committee, who packaged a report on the region's transportation needs to our membership at
a well-attended recent luncheon.

CHARTER REFORM
The City Charter that
governs Los Angeles may have worked in 1925. Seventy-four years later the citizens deserve
an update.
Since the original document has
grown to over 700 pages, two commissions, an appointed and elected group of people are
laboring to reduce its size and content.
The City Charter determines how
the city will be run with many crucial issues to be added such as the number of council
members, the power of neighborhood councils, and the Mayor's powers in discussions.
The goal is to draft a strong
document with clear lines of accountability with all comunities participating and using
clearer more flexible language for a better system of government.
The people will decide by vote
this year whether to change the Charter.
At a recent LAHq meeting held
jointly with CCA and LA Chamber of Commerce, many excellent points were made. Our own past
president, Chet Widom is Vice-Chair of the Elected Commission and has among others put in
countless hours to help prepare the Charter Document.
Chet cleared the air, made
cogent arguments and helped to facilitate an understanding of these complicated issues.

Charter Reform and the latest developments, please call Craig Lawson at 310/636-4400. |
ARE WE READY FOR THE NFL?
The National Football League
will be awarding a franchise this year. Will Los Angeles be the NFL's 32nd team?
What does this means to the
business community in downtown Los Angeles?
John Semcken, Vice President
of Majestic Realty and Executive Vice President of the New Coliseum Partners, has been at
the heart of the drive to bring pro football back to Los Angeles. At a recent program he
provided a lively presentation on how the Roski and Ovitz groups are doing with their
various proposals.

Pictorial of plans for
the Coliseum renewal
John is an engaging speaker
and brought a clear understanding of the problems and possibilities in rebuilding the
Coliseum and renewing the surrounding area.

John Semcken accepts
a gift from President John Stern and our thanks for an outstanding program.
STUDENT FIELD TRIP
Each year Education
Committee co-chair Mary Miyata organizes a field trip experience for the inner city school
children. This year Mary and her committee want to expand to 2 or 3 trips. Please call to
participate 213/683-1509. |
