| Dear
LAHQ Members:
It seems
I was just accepting my new role as President of the Los Angeles
Headquarters
Association, and now we are nearly halfway through this first
year
As I think
back over the last four months, I am reminded that my first
board meeting occurred on September 12th, in the midst of the
sadness, fear, anger and disbelief that we were all experiencing
in the aftermath of the events of September 11th. I chose to
have the meeting because it seemed better to stick to scheduled
plans and put one foot in front of the other in a slow march
toward moving on but not forgetting. Since that time, we have
all been touched by the way our nation pulled together, the
generosity of our people, and a heightened awareness of our
own vulnerability AND resilience.
That experience
has caused many of us to re-examine our lives and to direct
our attention to what is most important to us. Saying thank
you is one of those things.
I am grateful
for the strong support I have received from our Executive Director,
Sue Reeves, our Board of Directors and the many people who serve
on committees and in other ways

Thanks to
George Smith (1.), John Stern (c), Sharon Kaplan and Victor
Coleman for their all-inclusive real estate program.

contribute
to LAHQ's success. We all care about keeping our businesses
strong and the networking and great programs provided by our
organization certainly help us -inthia-regard, but it is also
the personal relationships and having people on whom I know
I can count that make this experience so rewarding.

City Attorney, is taught self-defense by a 5th grade student
at the Holiday Party.
We
have had three great general membership programs provided by
our terrific Program co- chairs, Ed Casey and Rasa Bauza.
The
first program was an outstanding kick-off on shaping the future
of Los Angeles, which featured Los Angeles Mayor Jim Hahn along
with Ted Tanner, President of Anschutz Entertainment Group and
a representative of the Governmental Affairs office of the LA
Unified School District. It was followed by a timely update
on local and global real estate and investment markets with
keen insights offered by speakers Victor Coleman, President
and COO of Arden Realty, Inc. and George Smith, Chairman and
CEO of George Smith Partners.

In
November we heard from the new, dynamic CEO of the Metropolitan
Transit Authority, Roger Snoble, who spoke of joint development
opportunities and his plans for using multiple modes of transportation
to form a more cohesive and successful public transportation system.
0ur Economic
Development Committee, co-chaired by Alice Wilson and Lynn Kious,
has been busy too, lining up great programs 'for 2002. The October
program, planned by Shirley Spinelli, was a visit to the Accelerated
Charter School. It was a heartwarming and inspiring experience
for those who met the dedicated teachers and students who have
contributed to this school achieving national recognition.
A high-energy
new member breakfast organized by co-chairs Teresa Powell and
Deborah Brown and attended by over 40 members, included presentations
from twelve new member firms, and a great chance for new and
old members to learn more about each other's businesses.
Our Education
Committee, co-chaired by Bob Mosier and Parker Jones, choreographed
a phenomenal Holiday Luncheon Party attended by more than 70
Utah Street School fourth and fifth graders who were hosted
by an even greater number of our members. We were honored to
