HONORS
The
Harkness Award for exceptional service and longtime support
to the association went to Past President John Whitaker.
John has been a member for over 25 years and has been a loyal,
committed and respected Director, joining many committees, and
in some cases forming and developing new committees and programs.
He has been a diplomat, a mentor, a leader and more often than
not let others take credit for his many accomplishments. His
unique qualities and engaging personality have inspired many
members and his selection to receive this honor (among many
others he has received) was a very popular one.

John Whitaker (I.) is surrounded by a presenter
Sharon Kaplan, First Vice President (c.) and previous winners
Marilyn Pepper and Pete SooHoo. Other recipients (not present)
are Barbara Trister and Norman Murdoch.

PRESIDENT'S
PERSPECTIVE

JOHN B. STERN
I
am proud of the people inside Los Angeles Headquarters Association
and the accomplishments that we have all made over the past
3 years. We have made terrific progress with our programs
and we continue to get more involved (as an organization)
in our community. Our programs have centered around major
issues such as building more schools, transportation, development
in residential and commercial areas and the impact on the
local communities from these developments. Our attendance
at our meetings has doubled over the past 2 years.
We continue to improve our technology and we have moved into
the 21st century with our WEB site and our interactive e-mail
responses. .
I would like to thank all of the people in our Association
and on our Board. First of all, I would like to thank Chair
Barbara Trister, and Bob Mosier and Bob Taylor
for all of their help on our Awards Luncheon. Both Parker
Jones and Bob Mosier have done a great job with
Education. This year we plan to give up to twenty computers
to the Utah Street School and to help start a new program
in technology. Thank you to Chairs Teresa Powell, Bob
Taylor and Lynn Kious, Business Networking and
Membership; Ed Casey, Marian Harvey and Allen
Walz, Economic and Environmental Development; Marilyn
Pepper, Newsletter; Sandy Paris, John Hendricks
and Ed Casey, Government Relations; Tom Freiberg,
Jr., Programs; and all of their committee members.

at the top of our list of priorities.
I ask each and everyone of you to reach way down inside yourself
and unselfishly give of yourself to our great city by giving
your time and expertise to help solve community issues and
to become a part of the family of the Los Angeles Headquarters
Association.

IN
MEMORY
Robert
Selleck was a past president of Los Angeles Headquarters and
one of the civic leaders who helped to widen the appeal and
scope of the Association in its early years.
He was a major developer and worked with his sons to develop
residential and business complexes in the San Fernando Valley.
Besides our association he was active in many other civic
endeavors.
He will be missed.
