Cultural
Award: Patricia Kennedy
For her support of the arts including the Joffrey Ballet
Patricia
Kennedy’s dynamic impact on the arts in Los Angeles
borders on the legendary. Her passion for dance found its
home with the Joffrey Ballet when she joined its Board of
|
Directors
in 1984. Over the next decade she chaired numerous Galas
and special projects expanding the Los Angeles dance audience
and providing vital funds for the support and future of
the company. The Los Angeles Friends honored her with “The
Arpino Angel Award” in 1996 for her significant contributions.
Her greatest triumph was the initiation and fulfillment
of the creative alliance between The Joffrey Ballet and
Prince. The result was the ground breaking rock ballet “Billboards”
which toured the world, generating larger, younger audiences.
Company cofounder Gerald Arpino resented her with “The
Decade of Leadership” Award for her tireless efforts
supporting the unique vision of The Joffrey Ballet. She
recently served as executive chairman for their highly successful
return engagement. |

Spirit
of Los Angeles: Pete Carroll
Head Coach of USC Football Team
Pete Carroll is a first rate hero to fans of USC Trojan
Football. He is just one of the many people that brought
Los Angelinos to downtown on January 21st to celebrate “USC
Trojan Day in LA.” Officials and fans paid tribute
to not only the Uni-versity’s national champion football
team, but also to the women's volleyball and men's water
polo teams. |
 |
As
Head Football Coach, Carroll played a key role in the University’s
success with his retooled team strategies that returned
USC’s football program to dominance. Carroll, who
has locked up some of the nation’s top football recruits
in the last couple of years, looks forward to an even stronger
team in the coming season. He has been named “Coach
of the Year for Division 1-A” by the American Football
Coaches Association, only one of many honors attributed
to |
him
over the past year. As illustrious as his brief three years
at USC have been, there is much more to Pete Carroll. His
enthusiasm, charisma and high energy coaching style led
to his NFL success where he was head coach of the New England
Patriots (1997-99), who made it into the playoffs two years
under his guidance, and the New York Jets (1994). Carroll
also served as Defensive Coordinator for the Jets, San Francisco
49ers, Buffalo Bills, and Minnesota Vikings. His passion,
however, has remained college football. He started his coaching
career as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Pacific.
He then worked with Lou Holz at Arkansas when they won the
Orange Bowl. Many other universities benefited from his
expertise and drive, but we are proud that he now exemplifies
“The Spirit of LA”. |
