Enhancing educational opportunities for kids in Los Angeles is at the heart of LAHq. Our Education Committee is excited to announce the recently established partnership with STAPLES Center' s Community Development group and the opportunity to extend educational support to the Tenth Street Elementary School. Through the efforts of former LAHq president, John Stern, a meeting was arranged with Jackie Baca-Geary, Staples' Community Development Manager, and Tenth Street' s Principal, Consuelo Garcia. John, and Education Committee Co-chair, Bob Mosier, presented LAHq' s record of achievement at Utah Street and Ninth Street Schools and LAHq was enthusiastically welcomed as a member of the team.

The partnership with STAPLES Center benefits all parties. Our Education Committee has a proven track record in providing field trips, books, special educational programs, mentors, computers and support services, and special events . such as our annual Christmas Party. STAPLES provides an established program for community outreach, name recognition, and the use of facilities for school events. What student wouldn't be thrilled to have their graduation at STAPLES Center?

Committee Co-chair Parker Jones, together with John and Bob, are working with the principal and teachers to establish this year's slate of activities. There are many ways to get involved in our on-going effort to enhance the lives of these school children. One way local professionals can help is to donate their time reading to students an hour each week.

As we become more active with the Tenth Street Elementary School, we will need to expand our Education Committee. We hope members with enthusiasm and creative ideas will become involved organizing, staffing and managing these rewarding events.
